Xeldrin contains Omeprazole, a benzimidazole derivative that inhibits gastric acid secretion. It works by blocking the hydrogen-potassium-adenosine triphosphatase (H+/K+ ATPase) enzyme system in gastric parietal cells. Following oral intake, its effect begins within an hour, peaks within two hours, and lasts up to 72 hours. Once discontinued, normal acid secretion gradually resumes within 3 to 5 days.
Xeldrin is prescribed for the treatment of:
- Gastric and duodenal ulcers
- NSAID-associated gastric and duodenal ulcers
- Prevention in patients with a history of NSAID-related ulcers
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- Long-term management of acid reflux disease
- Acid-related indigestion (dyspepsia)
- Severe ulcerative reflux esophagitis
- Prevention of acid aspiration during general anesthesia
- Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
- Peptic ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori infection
