Description

Cefim-3 DS contains Cefixime, an orally active, third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic with broad-spectrum bactericidal activity against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms. It is highly stable against β-lactamase enzymes, making it effective against pathogens resistant to many penicillins and some cephalosporins.

  1. Class: Third-generation cephalosporin (oral).
  2. Mechanism: Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), blocking peptidoglycan cross-linking, and leading to bacterial lysis.
  3. β-lactamase stability: Resistant to many β-lactamase enzymes, maintaining activity where penicillins and some cephalosporins fail.
  4. Absorption: 40–50%, unaffected by food intake.

Cefim-3 DS is indicated for the treatment of the following acute infections caused by susceptible microorganisms:

  • Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI): including otitis media and pharyngitis, particularly when resistance to first-line agents is suspected.
  • Lower Respiratory Tract Infections: such as bronchitis and pneumonia.
  • Urinary Tract Infections (UTI): including cystitis, cystourethritis, and pyelonephritis.
  • Other Infections: typhoid fever, gonococcal urethritis, and infections of soft tissues.

Common pathogens include Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes, Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, Klebsiella spp., Haemophilus influenzae (β-lactamase positive and negative), Moraxella catarrhalis (β-lactamase positive and negative), and Enterobacter spp.

Precautions & Warnings

Use with caution in patients with penicillin allergy (possible cross-reactivity).

Discontinue immediately if hypersensitivity reactions (rash, urticaria, anaphylaxis) occur.

Use cautiously in renal impairment (dose adjustment required).

Prolonged use may cause superinfection, including Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea.

Should not be used in pregnancy or breastfeeding unless essential and prescribed by a physician.
