Description

Generic Name: Moxifloxacin 400mg

Manufacturer/Distributor: Popular Pharmaceuticals Ltd.

Indications

Moxifloxacin is used to treat conditions such as acute bacterial sinusitis, acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, community-acquired pneumonia, uncomplicated and complicated skin and skin structure infections, complicated intra-abdominal infections, and pelvic inflammatory disease.

Pharmacology

Moxifloxacin is a 4th generation synthetic broad-spectrum antibacterial drug that belongs to the fluoroquinolone class of antibiotics. It is effective against a wide variety of bacteria, including gram-positive, gram-negative, anaerobic, and atypical Mycoplasma pneumonia. Topoisomerase II (DNA gyrase) and topoisomerase IV are inhibited, which are required for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, and repair.

Administration & Dosage

  • For acute bacterial sinusitis, take 400 mg once daily for seven to ten days.
  • If you have a bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, take 400 mg once daily for 5-10 days.
  • For community-acquired pneumonia, take 400 mg once daily for 7-14 days.
  • For uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections, take 400 mg once daily for 7 days.
  • Infections of the skin and skin structures: 400 mg once daily for 7-21 days.

Interaction

Moxifloxacin absorption is reduced when antacids, sucralfate, multivitamins, and multivalent cations are combined (e.g. iron or zinc). Moxifloxacin may increase the risk of convulsions and bleeding when combined with NSAIDs and warfarin. As a result, using Moxifloxacin alongside them should be avoided.

Contraindications

Patients who have a known hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients should avoid using this product.

Side Effect

Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, and dizziness are all common Moxifloxacin side effects.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Pregnancy category C according to the US Food and Drug Administration. During pregnancy and lactation, moxifloxacin is not recommended.

Precautions & Warnings

Tendinitis and tendon rupture are possible side effects of moxifloxacin. If a tendon becomes inflamed or painful, it should be stopped. It should not be used in patients who have a known prolongation of the QT interval, hypokalemia that has not been corrected, or who are taking Class IA or Class III antiarrhythmics.

Storage Conditions

Keep the temperature below 30°C and away from light and moisture. Keep out of children’s reach.
